| Abstract | Danang seaport, a state-owned company, is considered as the biggest port in the
Central region of Vietnam. Along with the economic reform process in Vietnam, the company
is facing the question of how to meet the high demand for cargoes transported, and be
competitive in the region. Hence, designing a strategic approach for the port development is
becoming very necessary and crucial.
This study deals with designing the development strategy for Danang Seaport
Company. Following the path of the conceptual framework, an exhaustive review of available
literature together with a series of individual in-depth interviews were undertaken to gather the
needed data for the strategic analysis process. By an external environment analysis that was
relied on scanning the economic potentials of the Central region and the port industry, the
opportunities and threats for Danang port were identified. In addition, all aspects of the port
such as location, landward transport system, technology, human resources, methods of cargo
handling etc., were examined to reveal its strengths and weaknesses. The focus strategy is
recommended as the port is facing a fast changing environment in the Central region. This
study also found strong evidence to support the hypothesis that Danang has met the
preconditions to develop a container terminal. |
