| Abstract | Proper utilisation of groundwater is of utmost importance for any area from
engineering as well as management point of view. Demands are gradually increasing but
resources is limited. For the sake of sustainability of the Project, extensive research is a must
to evaluate quantitatively the extent of available resources. The Barind Tract is
characteristically dry area, natural recharge is quite uncertain but development of this area is
closely related with the intensive use of its vast land with ensured irrigation. For this purpose,
estimation of possible amount of groundwater abstraction considering its future demand is
important for the sustainability of the project.
In estimating natural recharge of the Barind, water balance model, specific yield,
chloride balance and groundwater flow (through flow) methods have been used. The water
balance study has been performed for the period of 1981 to 1995 and the specific yield method
has been used for the period of 1988 to 1995. A two dimensional aquifer simulation model has
been calibrated and used to predict the sustainable yield of the groundwater basin. In
calibrating the model, groundwater recharge is used as the variable and all other aquifer
properties are used as obtained from the field. Sustainable yield has been estimated
considering constraints of economic lifting head and limiting draw down.
Results are found with wide variations. Yearly recharges obtained from water balance
studies are with the ranges of 31 mm to 537 mm and from specific yield method 209 mm to
315 mm. The long term average annual recharges are found to be 153 mm, 247 mm, 100 mm
and 97 mm by water balance, specific yield, chloride balance and groundwater flow method
respectively. Water balance study with Penman-Monteith evapotranspiration has also been
done for the period of 1991 to 1995 and the average recharge found to be 219 mm/ year. From
aquifer simulation model the average equivalent annual recharge found from calibration test is
182 mm and the sustainable yield has been estimated up to 2000 A.D. for the Barind basin. |
