| Abstract | Due to rapidly increasing deforestation, forest rehabilitation is a main matter of concem for the state. This study looks at the process of conserving forest and replanting tree in the degraded for est reserve area by selected communities, and to assess the potential of community forestty . Therefore the study has been c<irried out in a village where traditional community forest1y is practiced on state forest land, in a village where community forest1y has been promoted on state forest land, and in a village where small scale community forestry has been promoted on private and public land. Data was collected through questionnaire surveys and formal and infom1al interviews by the author. In addition three extem;ionists from the projects were selected as field work assistants by the author to help gather data during the field work. Under traditional community forestry the forest area has increased; under promoted community forestry it has remain unchanged; and under small scale community forestty the involvement with forestty seems to be progressing very slowly. Therefore, traditional conununity forestty and promoted community forestty strategies have been successful in forest conservation and management where as small scale community forestty has largely failed. The tluee cases under st1ldy are described in detail. The physical conditions and historical background in relation to forest issues in each village has been outlined followed by a description of community organization in each village and their role in community forestry. The importance of peoples' potential in social control and forest management has been highlighted as a key factor of community forestry. Also the economic conditions, particularly local opportunities for income generation, are described. Perceived advantage has been included as wt:ll, bt:ing a kt:y factor fur tht: <lt:vdupmt:nl of (;ommunity furnslry. Based on the findings, a community forest1y development strategy has been recommended. |
