| Abstract | A numerical model which can simulate the fate of sudden oil spills in the Gulf of
Thailand, was developed. The study initiated with the review of some existing literature on
hydrodynamic and oil slick trajectory modeling. A two-dimensional depth averaged
hydrodynamic model, based on Alternating-Direction Implicit method was used to generate
the tidal current. Spreading of oil slick was considered to be a result of gravity, inertia, surface
tension and viscous forces. Drifts due to wind, wave and tidal currents were vectorially added
to simulate the advection of oil slick. Evaporation of oil was treated as a function of wind
speed, geometry of the slick and the properties of oil.
Hydrodynamic and oil spill trajectory models were calibrated and varified separately as
there were no simultaneous data. Hydrodynamic model was calibrated for May 1993 and was
verified for June 1994. The verification of oil spill trajectory model was based on the
observations reported in April 1974 when an accidental oil spill occurred near the Chao Phraya
river mouth. The simulated locations of the oil slick in the first couple of days were compared
and found to be in good agreement with the observations. |
