| Abstract | The pollution prevention study was conducted in a fundamental industry which plays an
important role in country development. An industry producing steel from scrap by using EAF
was selected. The production capacity is 8,800 tons of billet, 4,800 tons of wire rod and 6,500
tons of steel bar.
The assessment was done to identify type, quantity and strength of pollutants. At
present, this steel factory consumed electricity 990 KW-hr and 110 L of fuel oil per ton of
products and generated: slag approximately 68 kg per ton of billet; dust 6 kg per ton of billet
and scale 50.7 kg per ton of products manufactured. The EAF dust contained significant of
hazardous metals (Pb,Cr,Cd) and high valuable metals (Zn).
Based on the weighted sum method, EAF section is the first priority area to considered
to reduce the impact of heat stress, noise and TSP to the worker.
Pollution prevention is a strategic that result in elimination or reduction of waste and
disposal problems, improvement in process efficiency, improvement in product quality through
better process control, and improvement in the working environment. The recommended
alternatives for pollution prevention strategies for the minimizing of steel-industrial waste in
this study are: segregation of scrap, substitution by DRI, use of purer melting stock, increment
in percent yield of the finnish product, recovery of waste heat for scrap preheating and recovery
valuable material contained in waste for treatment and/or use waste as a raw material in another
industry.
To recover the waste heat, the control of optimum combustion and a combination of
continuous casting mold with high speed rolling mill are recommended for energy saving. |
