| Abstract | From the trend of telecommunication services, multimedia service is going to be the
main service requested by the most of users into the future broadband network. Traffic
shaping for multimedia service will play the role to ensure the quality of service requirement.
In the published references, the simple source models such as ON-OFF model have been used
for evaluating the performance of traffic shaping which cannot fulfill the requirement of
studying traffic shaping for a multimedia service. Therefore, the multi-services source model .is
used in this thesis for the performance evaluation of traffic shaping. In this thesis, the P ARing
(Periodic Averaging of Rate) traffic shaping is proposed to used as the traffic shaping for a
multi-services source because not only it alters the traffic characteristics of the source to
conform the traffic contract, but also it reduces the burstiness of the source to allow higher
utilization within the network. Moreover the priority control can be arranged in shaper buffer
in order to improve the performance of the system. Simulation experiments concerning a
multi-services environment for the performances evaluation of P ARing traffic shaping and
comparative study with Leaky Bucket traffic shaping indicate that not only the cell loss
performance from P ARing traffic shaping is better than that from Leaky Bucket traffic
shaping, but also the output traffic characteristic from P ARing traffic shaping has lower
burstiness than that from Leaky Bucket traffic shaping. The priority control included in shaper
buffers of both traffic shaping mechanisms can improve. the cell loss performance of these
traffic shaping methods. |
