| Abstract | This thesis study investigates the performance of a Mobile Data network. Most of
the parameters in the study are based on the DataTAC system and are otherwise
mentioned in case of any assumptions made. The system basically consists of a wireless
network, an Ethernet Local Area Network (LAN), and a Transport Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) network, which is connected to the host computer.
The system performance mainly focuses on the end-to-end delay of the packets. The endto-end delay is defined as the average delay of the packets in traversing the system from
the wireless terminal to the host computer or vice versa. Two different cases are
considered, which are, inbound message routing and outbound message routing.
A discrete-event simulation program is developed to evaluate the network
performance in terms of average delay, effective rate, total backoff time, and the effect of
propagation error and number of Mobile Terminals. The performances are evaluated
separately for the inbound and outbound cases. The simulation results show that the
average end-to-end delay for inbound message routing is more as compared to that for
outbound message routing whereas the effective rate is higher for the outbound message
routing as compared to inbound message routing. |
