| Abstract | Surface waves, which are generated by an unevenness of river bed, show
complicated patterns. Therefore, the problem of waves induced on wavy boundaries is at
broad interest. Here, water waves in open channel flow over a fixed sinusoidal bed are
studied analytically and experimentally from the standpoint of stability of steady nonuniform
flows. Particularly, upstream-advancing waves have been observed in open
channel flows over a fixed sinusoidal bed, when the Froude number is less than the
resonant value. The wave length is about 3 to 7 times long compared with the bottom
wave length and the celerity takes the higher value scattered from the potential flow
theory. The phase diagram of the flow region in discharge and channel slope plane is
investigated in detail experimentally. In order to explain these phenomena, multiple-scale
perturbation method is applied for shallow water equations by assuming the flow to be
modulated non-uniform flow and considering various orders of external force, Manning's
resistance and eddy viscosity. Two models with different scaling are considered. One
gives decaying solution and later gives completed solution of forced nonlinear
Schrodinger equation. In this case, we consider the general solutions of mean quantities
and the second order term. |
