| Abstract | Due to large volume of nonmotorized vehicles in Jinan,
building an interchange is the one of effective methods to reduce
conflict between nomnotor ized and motorized vehicles at
intersection in ~hich motorized and nonmotorized vehicles should be
arranqed at different levels. This study is to compare different
interchanges and design guidelines, and to propose a proper
interchange protocol that accomodates the huge volume of bike in
China. Through investigating physical constraints, roadway system
and projecting rush-hour traffic volume and distribution within
study area - Dian-liu Intersection, two interchange configurations - rotary type and compound tv.pe, are designed. Al though the
operational condition of the compound configuration is slightly
better than that of the rotary configuration, several turning
movements are prohibited, and, as a result, may cause inconvenience
to drivers. After co1np1.·ehensive consideration · of initial
investment, land occupancy, operational convenience, and existing
geometric configuration of the intersection, the rotary configuration is recolUlCl.ended for the Dian- liu intersection.
Moreover, this study is to investigate the difference on
interchange geometric design between "Chinese standard on Design of
Urban Roadway (Chinese Standard) " and "American Policy on Geometric
Design of Highways and streets (G.KEEN BOOK ) ". The Chinese standard
and GREEN BOOK have differences on items, i.e. , design vehicles,
design speed, roadway capacity, nonmotorized vehicles and vertical
curve. ·.rhese differences are caused by factors such as development
level, traffic.: requirement. and composition |
