| Abstract | This study tries to show the applicability of the GIS for the
landslide hazard zonation and disaster prone area mapping. The
methodology of the landslide hazard zonation and disaster prone
area mapping is based on the spatial information with the related
study. The landslide hazard zone map is used along with settlement
map and land use map to produce the disaster prone area map. The
disaster prone area map as a primary tool to prepare the disaster
preparedness plans input for the decision maker and planner.
The methodology has been used for the landslide hazard
zonation are based on the principle of the past represent future
occurrence. In which the landslide distribution map is overlaid
with other landslide influencing spatial parameters slope, aspect,
land system, land use, bedrock, Isohytel & seismic zonation, and
first order buffered stream map. The qualitative judgement has been
made for the ranking of this parameters considering the data obtain
from GIS overlay and the field experience.
The methodology has been used to produce disaster prone area
map by overlaying ranked & weighed landslide hazard zone, land use
and buffered settlement map.
To perform this study, vector based GIS tool was widely
utilised for digitizing, overlaying and producing the thematic
map.
The slope & aspect maps were generated from the Digital
Terrain Model (DTM) from the contour map digitized in point. The
land use map & landslide map were produced from the aerial photo
interpretation.
The GIS has been found more effective in analysing the
landslide distribution spatially by overlaying with various maps
related with the factors affecting landslide occurrence.
The result of the study obtained from the landslide hazard
zonation & disaster prone area map illustrated three relative level
of severity i.e. high, medium and low. |
