| Abstract | Real life facility planning problems involve the selection of the most effective arrangement of
facilities to allow the greatest efficiency with the combination of resources to produce a product or
service. Performance evaluation of the alternative layouts, particularly in the manufacturing
environment, involves a great deal, and it is not only the apparent materials flow cost. In a
manufacturing cell, the overall perfo1mances such as the production pe1formance, equipment
utilization, etc., are affected by the arrangement of the physical facilities to a great extent.
This study is dedicated to the use of simulation technique as a perfo1mance evaluation tool
in facility layout design through an object oriented simulation package, called Simple++. To
illustrate the concept of using simulation as an integrated part of facility layout design, a case
example of combining two manufacturing cells in Thai Engineering Product (TEP) Co., Ltd., was
carried out. The main purpose of this study is to develop the feasible alternative layouts and to
evaluate them by simulation techniques. Moreover, the study was concerned; whether a better
result can be achieved by combining the two separate manufacturing cells or not.
Five alternative layouts have been generated with the capability of a facility layout design
package, called Factory-Plan. The first simulation model had been developed with the real-world
data to shnulate the existing system and-subsequently the second model was built up to represent
the proposed layouts. Statgraphics software package was used to dete1mine the family of
distribution of the input parameters to the model. Simulation runs on each model, representing the
alternative layouts, were performed and their performance were evaluated. Then a comparison
was made between the best generated layout and the existing system for their perfo1mances. It has
been observed that a significant amount of improvement can be made by implementing the
proposed layout and policy. This study also concerns about the effectiveness of the available
computer aided layout design packages namely Factory-Plan, Factory-Cad, Factory-Flow and
Micro-Craft.
This study recommends that simulation can be used as an effective tool in facility layout
design, particularly in the design of manufacturing cells, where the overall performance of the
layouts can not be judged by the apparent materials flow costs. In the methodology, simulation
technique is incorporated in the selection phase of the SLP. As far. as the particular case of TEP
Company is concerned, it is recommended that, by combining the manufacturing cells under study;
in the proposed way, the productivity of the cell can be enhanced to a greater extent. |
