| Abstract | The study is focused on the improvement of manufacturing performance processed on a
shoe manufacturing factory (RFIII), especially on two main manufacturing divisions. Mass-density
and frequently changed product models and worker constructions are prominent features of the
manufacturing of this company. According to these features, intensive tests of operation times for
different operations has been done using carefully chosen DTSIS time study policy. The time test
results both on standard operation time and their variance. On the basis of time study, effects of
operation times on line performance are researched and suitable line balancing techniques are
tested by means of line balancing. Line balancing is done in two steps. A software from Storm
which is the realization of HOFFMANN Branch & Bound algorithm are used in first step of line
balancing treating operation times as constants. After that BENJAAFAR model are used to
evaluate the solutions treating operation times as stochastic variables. BENJAAF AR has modeled
flow lines as M/M/k multiserver queue systems. On consideration of frequently changed situations
in workers, work assignment flexibility is advised to the company. Ranked positional
weight(RPW) line balancing technique is also utilized to the aim of comparing the line
performance with operation groups and without operation groups in manufacturing flow lines. The
result gained from RPW and those from close study to expected waiting time both indicate a large
advantage of using groups. The line balancing techniques used in this study are shown better than
that of company used now. Satisfied line balancing solutions for chosen assembly lines and
stitching lines are also achieved in this study. |
