| Abstract | The food processing industry is in a growth stage in Pakistan. This research study
recommends a qualitative business strategy analysis. In addition it points out the directions for
future changes required in Food Processing Companies in order to respond more effectively to a
rapidly changing national economic environment.
The case study is focused on Shezan International Limited-- a market leader in food
processing industry in Pakistan. The company, established in 1964, currently operates in jams,
squashes, ketchup, pickles etc. In 1993 Shezan’s sales revenues were Rs. 453 .44 millions. A
fundamental question in the company’s future is its ability to define a plausible business strategy
in order to cope effectively with multinationals which are coming into the country in the near
future.
Using the business strategy framework recommended by Michael E. Porter as a basis, a
new set of business strategies is formed and also proposed a strategy based on a relationship
model for strategic management. The model was developed on the basis of current trends in
strategic management of food processing companies world over.
A comprehensive in-depth interview techniques with management of the Shezan,
consumers, retailers, wholesalers and super markets etc. was used to identify environmental
opportunities and threats, and internal strengths and weaknesses, which lead to the development
of a recommended business strategy. |
