| Abstract | To evaluate the "Haizda Embankment Project" contribution, overall condition of the
farmers (within the project area) what was before the project construction as well as the
present situation were considered. Expected outcome from the project implementation was also
considered in this regard.
The findings of this study are, due to the project construction farmers are giving more
attention for Boro cultivation as well as use of HYV seeds, use of fertilizer, use of insecticide,
labor employment and farmers yearly income significantly increased. On the other hand, crop
damages through early flood, insufficient irrigation water and drainage congestion significantly
decreased. Overall water management situation and transportation facilities are increased
within the project area except there are little adverse effect on fish production within the
project area and water management situation outside the project area somewhat interrupted
through the construction of embankment.
Except little adverse effect, the project has several fruitful impacts on the project area
but not at the expected level. The causes behind it may be as : firstly, the project was
constructed only two years before and secondly, some of the essential components of the
project not yet been installed. Finally, it is seem that the partial flood control projects are
more suitable rather than the full control or polder type of projects in the Haor areas of
Bangladesh. |
