| Abstract | Field studies were conducted during January 1993-March 1994 in Camdong and
Binhminh cooperatives, Cambinh district, Haihung province, Red River Delta, Vietnam.
The information was gathered at farm level as well as from secondary sources.
Capital is one of the most important factors affecting farm productivity. The aim of
this study is to analyze financial situation at farm level and find out the financial problem
of farmers of different income groups. The study also aimed at estimating household credit
need in order to utilize their existing resources more efficiently. Based on field studies,
a few farm models of household activities have been developed for different groups of
farmers. The model assesses an impact of the current lending policy of formal credit
institution on household gross margin.
The study reveals that farming systems of low income household is not so
diversified and less intensified than medium and high income households due to their poor
assets and their heavily dependence on borrowed capital. Farmers of low income groups
need to borrow for both consumption and production purposes. Medium and high income
households need medium and long term credit to diversify farming system and to expand
off-farm activities. The current credit lending system of formal credit institution has strong
impact on household gross margin of low income groups. The household gross margin of
medium and high income groups is increased slightly when borrowing capital is
incoperated into the existing farming models. This reflects the strong demand of the low
income farmers for working capital.
Therefore, the household total gross income of all group of farmers should be
increased when formal credit institutions provide bigger amount of short term loan to low
income household as well as medi1:1m and long term loan to medium and high income
households. |
