| Abstract | An irrigation system may lay the groundwork for increased farmer
productivity. To maximize the benefits of irrigation and to reach
the objective of maximizing the use of irrigation water
efficiently, land may also be levelled and reshaped. Land
levelling and reshaping is primarily meant to ensure that the
irrigation water in a field is spread uniformally. This type of
scheme in Thailand is known as Agricultural Land Consolidation
which jointly managed by the Royal Irrigation Department and
Agricultural Extension Office.
As technologies bring about increased productivity in
agriculture, it is important to attract farmers with a reliable
market for their increased outputs. For this purpose, the Royal
Canning factory a food processing plant was also established for
canning and marketing agro-products, such as tomato, baby corn,
passion fruits, etc. and assisting farmers in providing
agricultural inputs in credit through contract farming.
Tambon Non Din Daeng in Buriram Province, enjoys the developments
since the Irrigation and Land Consolidation projects and the
Royal canning factory were established in 1983. The project of
land consolidation is a pilot project and the canning factory is
a food processing plant in Northheast Thailand.
The study suggests that the land consolidation project in Non Din
Daeng has increased farmer's income, but it has no significant
different in terms of agricultural productivity compared to the
situation outside the project under the irrigated area. The
hypotheses that the land consolidation brings about increased
intensity of cropping, highly use of recommended variety (HYVs)
and agricultural inputs, multiple cropping pattern, and positive
perceptions of the beneficiaries proved to be succeed. Economic
analysis on the project level demonstrates positive result that
it is a beneficial and feasible project. By strengthening its
joint cooperation with the canning factory through contract
farming new crop with higher value added can be promoted. |
