| Abstract | The study aims at assessing the accessibility of student to
reach the school, which would help in determining the provision of
schools at the district level.
Analysis of accessibility and travel to secondary school s was
made for nine selected school zones in the study area Lahansai and
Pakham districts. It was found that good accessibility depends on
the location of the school, length of travel and modes of transport
vis-a-vis their place of origin.
Accessibility in all school zones was shown to be affected by
the mode selected, public transport (local bus) routing and the
choice of schools. All these were found to have an effect on travel
time.
From the students survey revealed that many of the students
were using bicycle and bus as a means of transportation to reach
their school, which spent approximately thirty minutes travel to
avail the school s.
Drawing equi-distant lines (isochrone) to the existing schools
manifest that only 100 of the 165 villages (61 percent) are within
a 30-minute travel distant. In terms of students population, it
only a service cover of around 41.5 percent of the total
population. A 45 minute isochrone, meanwhile, would cover 123
villages or 74.5 percent of the total villages.
Consequently, the forgoing indicates, among others, the need
for shifting students into the areas of better access, by providing
or improving the school facilities, and improvement of the
accessibility of existing school s by improving the road
infrastructure.
Finally, the study formulated a number of school need to be
improved (additional classrooms) and constructed i.e, within and
outside the 30 minutes travel time. |
