| Abstract | Experimental studies were undertaken to investigate the performance of lab-scale and pilotscale AF (anaerobic filters) reactors subjected to different heavy metal loadings. The AF consisted
of two reactors, the first-stage and second-stage AF reactors; effluent of the first-stage AF reactor
was the influent of the second-stage AF reactor. Electroplating wastewater mixed with domestic
wastewater at different ratios were fed to the AF reactors.
Results of the lab-scale experiments indicated that Cu and Cr concentrations in the ranges
of 0.2-12.5 mg/land 0.12-1.0 mg/l, respectively, did not have much effects on the COD removal
efficiencies. When the first-stage reactor had high COD removal efficiencies, there was no
significant improvement in overall COD removal efficiencies from the second-stage AF reactor.
However, the second-stage reactor was found to be beneficial in removing heavy metals contained
in the influent wastewater. The pilot-scale AF reactors had better COD and heavy metal removal
efficiencies than the lab-scale AF reactors probably because of more biomass (VSS) present in
the former which helped in biodegrading and absorbing the COD and heavy metal compounds,
respectively. |
