| Abstract | In relation to the Second Bangkok International Airport (SBIA) Project,
soft ground behavior and ground improvement techniques were studied. Results
or earlier ground investigations done during 1973 and 1984 together with
later studies in 1992 were collected and analyzed to obtain the design
parameters. Furthermore, the Asaoka method and back-calculation technique
from dissipation tests were performed on previous well documented test
sections to investigate the in-situ value of drainage properties. It was found
that the in-situ horizontal coefficient of consolidation, Ch, value ranges from
0. 8 to 5.5 m2/yr for very soft clay to soft cl ay layer. A corresponding the
value of 0.4 to 1.5 m2 /yr is found for in-sit u vertical coefficient of consolidation. The kh/kv ratio of 1.5 to 3 based on the Ch/Cv ratio was also
obtained and used in soil improvement design. Subsequently, amongĀ· the ground
improvement methods, the prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) with precompression was studied to determine the most appropriate drain spacing, drain
length and amount or load required to precompress the soft soil to minimize
the post construction settlement. The results of FEM analysis using CRISP-1990
computer software indicated the use of prefabricated vertical band drain of
either 1.0m or 1.2m spacing would minimize the consolidation settlement after
a period of 180 days. The extension of PVD length into groundwater drawdown
zone can causes a larger settlement. In order to avoid the larger settlement
clue to effect or piezornetric head drawdown in lower aquifer, the appropriate
length of PVD seems to be 10m long. |
