| Abstract | The current design practice of bored piles in residual weathered formations in Kuala
Lumpur is based mainly on shear strength. The settlement considerations are not given due
attention at this design stage even though the acceptance criteria of single piles during pile
load tests is based on the permissible settlement values as stipulated in specifications/codes.
In this study, a reliable method of predicting the complete load settlement and load
distribution curves is proposed for bored piles in a residual weathered formation (Kenny Hill
Formation : meta-sedimentary) based on the:
1. Careful considerations of the weathering profiles and the engineering
characteristics of this formation.
2. Field performance data on full scale instrumented bored pile load tests.
3. Load transfer characteristics design of the load deformation behavior.
In this deformation analysis, the pile installation method and the non-linear behavior of the
pile material are also incorporated.
A rational design procedure is proposed for bored piles in this formation considering
both the serviceability state (settlement) and the ultimate state (stability against shear failure).
Further, the elastic methods can be used to predict the pile group settlement at design loads.
Simple correlations are obtained to estimate the elastic modulus of this formation. |
