| Abstract | In 1981, Taipei Municipal Government (TMG) started the MRT
(Mass Rapid Transit) s ystem network study and the first mass
transit system will operate in 1994 . The MRT system will provide
fast , convenient , and comfortable transport service to Metropolitan
Taipei citizens.
In order to understand the characteristics of Taipei MCT
(Medium Capacity Transit) system, other MRT or LRT systems of
selected Asian cities (Singapore, Calcutta, Sendai and Manila ) were
compared with Taipei MCT . Out of leve l of service indexes travel
time , convenience , comfort and safety are desired by Taipei ' s
people. According to their evaluation , Taipei MCT system is
evaluated as second leve l among five cities.
In order to understand people's willingness to change the
present transport mode and their opinion about the building of the
MRT or MCT systems, home interview and field interview
ques tionnaire were conducted around the MCT stations. All primary
data were analyzed by the SPSS/PC and STATGRAPHIC program.
A highly significant proportion reveals that most the
respondents would not shift from their present transport mode to
the MCT because it doubts the system quality. On t he contrary, over
90 percent of the respondents agree to build the system because it
will alleviate traffic congestion. It can also be found that travel
time saved , travel fare level, station with parking facility and
transfer facility are important factors which influence their mode
shift to MCT.
Analys is of res ults based on people's opinions and comments on
the system will provide to the Taipei Municipal Government (TMG) an
improvement plan for transit system quality. At the same time, it
will also provide the Taiwan Province Government (TPG ) a reference
for other cities mass transit system planning. |
