| Abstract | This study is concerned with constraints of major crop
productions in Qian Dongnan Autonomous prefecture. It focused on
(1) identifying the major factors responsible for the potential
yield: (2) determining the possibility and costs of to removing
these constraints; and (3) prioritizing the agricultural research
and guiding effective allocation of existing resources.
Information was collected from farmers, experts, and other
agricultural staff through questionnaire and interview.
It was found that the major constraints in the prefecture
were two parts: socio-economic and technical. The study i s
focused on the technical constraints. Among the technical
problems, rapeseed diseases are the most important factor in
terms of its Net Return on Re search. Rice diseases and insects
are ranked No. 2 a nd No . 3 respectively. Corn is the least
important one among these three crops. It means more research is
needed on rapeseed and rice. However, by comparing the share of
crop values and net r e turn on research with their research budge t
and research intensity, the study also shows that current
allocation of research fund in Qian Dongnan is not efficient. The
research system does not reflect the needs of the farmer in
specific prefecture.
Based on actual situation in the prefecture, the author
concludes that further progress of agricultural research, depends
upon, t o a great extent, the effective use of research inputs . |
