| Abstract | Four laborato r y scale upflow fi l ters ( 15 . 74 1 ), having Bi o l oop as
filter medi um ,were fed with acetat e as a sole carbon source, at a n
hydraul ic retent i on time of 1 day . The experimen ts were conducted
at a n average ambien t t emperat u re o f 30°c . One reactor was fed with
nitrat e as a n e l ec t ro n acceptor to s tudy denitrification and t he
ot her on e was f ed wit h s ul fate for s ulf a t e reduction. For the th i rd
reactor bot h ni trate a nd s u lfate we r e f ed a nd t he last one was se t
as con t ro l withou t a n y of t hese t wo e l ectron acceptors.
Whi l e keepi ng the acetate concentrat i on i n t he range of 700 - 910
mg/l, nitrate and su l fate concentrat i ons were varied i n the range
of 40 - 2 10 mg/ l and 190 - 370 mg/ l , respectively.
The res u lts showed t hat a nitrate concen tration of 180 mg/l
( l oad ing rate = 180 mg/ 1-d) has more in f l uence than a s ulfate
concentration of 270 mg/I (load ing rate= 270 mg/1-d), on reduc t ion
in methane produ ction . The reactor hav i ng only sulfate removed 190
mg/l (remova l rate of 190 mg/ 1- d) of sulfate irrespect i ve of the
inf l ue nt s ulf a t e concentration wh ich var i ed from 23 0 - 370 mg/ l
( l oadi ng rate of 230 - 270 mg/1-d). Th is may be due to t he b i omass
limi tation of su l fate reducers i n t he reactor . Al so denitrificat i on
of 210 mg/I ( l oadi ng rate of 21 0 mg/1- d ) of n itrate occurr e d even
at 350 mg/ I ( load ing rate of 35 0 mg /1 -d ) of s u lfat e concentrat i on . Furt hermore 853 of t he acetate u ti l ization, 963 of s ul fate
reduction and 100% nitrat e reduction took place i n t he bottom (15
cm) o f the r eac tors . |
