| Abstract | This study mainly focuses on the GT-N-6 Water Transmission Project undertaken by Banglcol< Metropolitan Water Worl<s Authority. The Instrumentation data on the tunnel instrumentation section has been analysed and the ground response to tunneling and the pressure developed on the tunnel lining has been studied. Cracl<S that developed in the segment al concret e lining has been mapped and studied together with the instrumentation results to evaluate the performance of the tunnel lining. Shaft sinking technique along with ground movements has been studied. Pressure developed on the primary lining due to soil was not uniform. Pressure developed on the springlin e was greater than the pressure developed at the crown due to the passive resistance of the soil when the tunnel squat. Maximum average surface settlement was 53 mm at the end of monitoring period of 235 days and the settlement seems to continue with time. The cracl<s that developed in the primary lining were predominantly longitudinal cracks by bending and the transverse cracks were caused by thrust of the shield jacl<. Shield Tunneling in Banglrnl< Subsoils has p1·oven its success and is well suited for Banglrnk Stiff Clay. Shaft constr uction using Caisson Sinl<lng Technique did not cause undesirable ground movements and is suited for Banglrnk Subsoils due to the homogenous layering of the soil that provide uniform resistance at the cutting edge of the shaft. |
