| Abstract | A reliable estimate of crop water requirements is one of the key design criteria
required for the planning, design and operation of irrigation schemes. Rapid irrigation
development in China has stretched to the limit of its water resource. Significant saving
on irrigation water can be made by improved water management. Accurate estimation of
crops evapotranspiration is a prerequisite. In this study, eight meteorologic methods of
reference crop evapotranspiration (ETo) estimation were selected for the evaluation of
local evapotranspiration (ETo) on a monthly basis and tested against the lysimeter
measurements. These methods represent combination theory and empirical formulations
based primarily on solar radiation, temperature and Pan evaporation. The standard error
of estimate (SEE) was calculated compared with Lysimeter value. Based on it, the
Penman-Monteith was ranked first among the methods.
Chinese pan was calibrated against other ETo estimation methods such as Penman-Monteith,
Lysimeter and Class-A Evaporation pan and coefficients were established.
The ETo results of Penman-Monteith are used to calculate the areal
evapotranspiration by applying geostatistical method, and other traditional interpolation
methods based on deterministic approaches (Viz. the arithmetic method, the Thiessen
polygon method, inverdistance method, mincurve method). In addition to the above, the
Complementary Relationship Areal Evapotranspiration (CRAE) model was also used to
calculate the areal evapotranspiration. A detailed documentation of the Fortran Program
for the CRAE Model has been developed. Standard error of estimate (SEE) and standard
deviation were calculated to compare each other. Among the methods tested, Penman-Monteith
method with Kriging interpolation technique and CRAE model were found to
be the suitable methods of aerial evapotranspiration estimation for the project area. |
