| Abstract | In recent years in many developing countries interest has been focused on
Small and Medium Sized Firms (SMFs), for the employment generation and income
distribution potential. However, at the early stages of SMF formation, they remain
risky so funds from formal markets are seldom available. To encourage SMF growth,
governments in many countries have taken special schemes which most of the time
include soft loans to SMFs. Intermediaries and special support organizations are
involved in delivering such services to SMFs in developing countries like
Bangladesh. However, such government schemes failed to stimulate expected growth
of SMF. Problems existed in functioning of intermediaries and support organizations.
The objective of this study is to identify problems faced by Bangladeshi
intermediaries and SMFs and find out some solutions to those problems from Belgian
financing systems.
This report starts out with a literature review on SMF barriers, common
financing methods for early-stage firms, and risks that are encountered by
intermediaries. Then SMF financing situation in Bangladesh is analyzed. The
problems of intermediaries and SMFs related to long term financing are identified
using secondary and primary sources. To get the input from other financing systems
for searching solutions to some problems in Bangladesh, Belgian SMF financing
methods and practices are analyzed. Then transferability of some Belgian methods
and other possibilities has been critically reviewed and discussed. The author has
long experience in the long-term investment financing which also contributed
towards identifying the problems and suggesting solutions.
The paper concludes by highlighting some important recommendations and
suggesting further research scope. |
