| Abstract | For developing countries, collaboration with foreign suppliers of technology with the
purpose of getting access to new technology can constitute an important vehicle for achieving
national objectives and goals. In this regard, foreign investment in the form of joint ventures
is a relatively new phenomenon in the Nepalese industry.
This study examines Nepalese firms established through the joint venture mode, both in
the conventional as well as relatively new areas of business. The objective of this paper is to
look into the joint venture contract process in general, factors contributing to successful joint
venture contracts, the partner selection process and finally the associated problems of the joint
ventures.
Based on the relevant literature, the research framework was derived. Interviews with
a structured questionnaire for 16 companies were conducted to examine the joint venture
contract process, success factors, and the partner selection process.
Mann-Whitney test and Kendall's Tau-b were used as statistical tests. In addition, the
discriminant analysis was used to identify the most significant influencing factors of successful
joint venture contracts.
The results show that there is a sequence of joint venture contract process and there
exists some factors which are related to the success and failure of joint venture contracts such
as the degree of prior knowledge, degree of strategy compatibility, government policies, and
financial status.
The presentation also includes a discussion of implications for firms and the government
regarding the necessity of adopting a strategy which incorporates the focus of enhancing
technological self-reliance as well. |
