| Abstract | The growth of any industry lies mainly on the products and
the system of manufacturing. It is not sufficient for a firm to
launch on automation technology without the required system of
manufacturing even if it has the necessary equipments and Machine
Tool s to produce the necessary products. In the case of flexible
automation like the Flexible Manufacturing Systems it is very
essential to adopt the up-to- date technology with the service of
experienced personnel who has a thorough Knowledge of the system.
The concept of Scheduling of Machine Tools for the Operations is
the heart of any manufacturing firm. With the advent of
Artificial Intelligence, the manufacturing field has seen a rapid
development in modernization and the technique of Knowledge based
Systems extended its existence very well in the automation
technology.
In this research study, a Knowledge based Systems approach
is developed to Schedule parts in a Flexible Manufacturing
environment. A representative Engineering Company producing
automobile parts for engines of light commercial vehicles is
selected as the source of study. The Knowledge acquisition
procedure contained discussions with a team of experts (Engineers
in the company) and Observation in the plant. The study contains
the evaluation of an expert systems development tool (EXSYS) for
the purpose of rule formulation. The next phase is the creation
of the Knowledge base using the rules and finally the testing of
rules and results with the experts in the company has been
carried out.
The research study of knowledge based Scheduling i s
undertaken in an Exhaust manifold line in the company which
produces three kinds of product s in different batches. The li ne
possesses the required Computerized machine tool s for automation.
At first, a FMS Configuration f or the line is designed since
there is no such design prevail ed in the company. After
developing the model of FMS and getting the consent from t he
experts the task of Scheduling is undertaken using the Knowledge
Based scheduling Approach. |
