| Abstract | In the present study, an inverse analysis technique has been adopted
to estimate parameters like effective soil modulus and permeability,
those play an essential role in a linear elastic coupled consolidation
analysis, and also to identify a suitable yet simplified model for
assessing the field behaviour of a geotechnical phenomenon. The case of
a 3m. high control embankment built on marine clay of Muar Flats, Malaysia
has been considered here, and the necessary observation data on the
general deformation pattern of the embankment and its subsoil were
gathered from the published reports of the Malaysian Highway Authority.
The Akaike Bayesian Information Criterion (or, ABIC in short) was applied
for model identification. For carrying out the non-linear parameter
optimization process the Fletcher-Reeves conjugate gradient method,
further modified by POWELL (1977), was applied. The issue of
parameterization was tackled by appropriate zonation scheme and
considerable attention was paid to follow the stress-path dependent
nature of the concerned parameters representative of the respective
zones. Parameter sensitivities were computed at each stage of the
analysis, which aided greatly to assert the role of the individual model
parameters in analysis. In the course of this analysis , a 5-zonation
scheme was found to produce an optimal zoning pattern. In order to get
the finite element solution for the linear-elastic coupled consolidation
model, the CRISP program (written in FORTRAN-77) was employed. For
performing the inverse analysis in a comprehensive manner, CRISP was
modified and new subroutines were added. |
