| Abstract | Hundreds of shallow landslides that developed into debris flows in Ban
Kathun of Amphoe Phipun, Southern Thailand during the unprecedent rainstorm
of November 21-23 1988 brought great damage to property and human life.
The failures left evidence over the granite terrain which could be easily
weathered into thin layers of landslide prone residual soils.
This study concentrated on landslides in Ban Kathun that occupied an
area about 56 square kilometers. The geologic formation of the area was
mainly granite on the mountainous terrain and on the southern edge of the
mountains was sedimentary rock (muds tone). Most of the landslides occurred
in the granite terrain while only two places where small soil slump and soil
flow was found over the weathered sedimentary rock
Field and laboratory investigations were carried out to assess the
physical and engineering properties of the weathered granite. According to
the properties, a practical weathering classification was arrived based on
field experience and previous 1·esearch results. Typical weathering profile
was summarized and correlated to the landslides. Landslide types observed,
based on field evidence, was mainly erosion, gullying, earth flow, soil slump,
debris flows a nd rock slide. Their features were described and summarized
in detail. Field identification was difficult because little information left
on the scars which were further modified after the landslides event.
The study also discussed the effect of typical climatic condition
(microclimate), destruction of natural forest and indigenous practice of rubber
planting, the importance of subtle landform (depressions) on the landslides. |
