| Abstract | Agroforestry n ow become popular science in the field of
environmental conservation. In this sense, this study
objectively attempted to focus on the design of
participatory agroforestry practices for Reforestation of
Denuded Forest Lands in Khao Kho, Thailand . Simultaneously,
this study aims to provide experience of diagnosis and
design of agroforestry system for development of
agroforestry planning.
For these purposes, two planning tools, Rap id Rural
Appraisal a nd Formal Survey are employed together in the
study as a combined methodology. By u sing this methodology,
socioeconomic conditions of the stud y area were analyzed .
Based on the findings o f this study, it was established
that an agroforestry system can be viable in the study area
but some factors to be considered are: limitation of family
labor availability, limited market scope and limited
attractiveness of investment in the tree component on the
farm, limitation of knowledge for better land use practices
and the need for a highly productive system for
agroforestry.
Various agroforestry practices were also conceived for
the purpose of selecting suit able agroforestry systems .
Within the existing situation, boundary plan ting was found
to be the most feasible practice at present. Based on this,
a n Adaptable Coppice with Standard Boundary System (ACSBS)
was suggested for application. This is planting tree in row
intensively along the farm border and to b e managed by
coppice with standard system for sustainable fuelwood
supply.
In line with these factors, three requirements were
required for agroforestry development. These are a target
group approach, a n intensive extension network and
integration of development activities.
Finally, with regard to agroforestry planning, this
study revealed that the combined methodology for diagnosis
and design of agroforestry is applicable but it will be less
applicable in less capital intensive projects . By developing
techniques for quantitative data collection in RRA process,
it would be more useful , in our view, in practice . |
