| Abstract | Concept Data Modeling System (CDMS) is a computer aided
database design system that aids the user designer throughout the
database design process - from requirements specification to
implementation design stage. CDMS is written in Smalltalk/V and
runs on a personal computer. The system consists of an interactive
interface through which the user can model the application
environment. A multipane window facility coupled with the use of
a mouse and keyboard greatly reduces the inputs required and
eliminates the need to remember specific syntax of the CDM language.
Central to this system is a new semantic data model
called Concept Data Model (CDM).
CDM has been designed to be a simple and natural modeling
tool for database application systems by supporting structures
that are in close correspondence with the natural constructs
found in most application domains. Powerful and useful abstraction
mechanisms like generalization and aggregation are supported.
CDM can be used as formal specification tool. The CDM
schema defined can serve as a documentation in itself. Finally,
the CDM constructs can be relatively directly represented by the
canonical structures of the lower level conventional data mode ls.
A mapping from COM schema to relational model is presented here.
Translation to the other conventional data models is believed to
be possible although the task may not be trivial. |
