| Abstract | Irrigation is a prerequisite for improving agricultural production. Where
gravity irrigation is not possible, water lifting devices fulfill the requirement. But
the rising cost of fuel give rise to search a renewable energy source of power.
water-turbine pump is a device which harness the energy of flowing streams and
has a wide applicability in this era . Investigation on its performance under
different working head condition plays a key role in decision making for its
application to the site.
Three water-turbine pump of same size (20 cm runner dia) but of different
mal<e i.e. Chin a, Usa company Thailand, and RID Thailand , were tested to evaluate
their performance under five different constant working heads. Performance was
tested under 0. 93 m, 1. 5 m, 1. 75 m, 2. 00 m, and 2.1 5 m. Maximum efficiency of
Chinese pump was found v1rying from 25.43% t o 37 .88% wit h the respective
change in head. Maximum efficiencies of Usa company varied from 23 .15% to 35. 75%
with respective change in head. Similarly maximum efficiency of RID Thailand made
pump varied from 22. 78% to 35. 77% with the respective change in heads. Maximum
lift for Chinese, Usa company and RID pumps was found varying between 6.57 m
to 18.07 m, 5.95 m to 17.63 m and 5.23 m to 16.73 m respectively under different
heads. Chinese pump has the maximum efficiency and lift.
Study on manufacturing process shows that most of the pump parts can be
manufactured locally. Only a few parts including rubber seals and roller bearing
are to be purchased. To mal<e water-turbine pump, a runner vane is designed at
maximum efficiency. Combination of any centrifugal pump coinciding with runner
speed may be adopted to mal<e water-turbine pump. Performance evaluation of the
three pumps depicts that Chinese pump is a best in performance. Study of the pump
components also s h ow that its adoption as device for lift irrigation with a
renewable source of energy has a wide scope. |
