| Abstract | The objectives of this research were to assess the
possibility of producing the AIT jab seeder in Nepal and to
evaluate its performance in the Nepalese conditions. Fifty
seeders an d the jigs, fixture a nd die were manufactured at
Agricultural Too l s Factory. It has be e n found that the seeders
ca n be produced in local workshops and s mall industries with
locally available tools, techniques and materials. The seeders
were tested in the laboratory and in the farmers' fields. Th e
field tests conducted at Birganj, Machhegaon and Naikap, and
the feedback received f rom t h e farmers have indicated that the
seeder enables a saving of a bout one-fifth to one - third in the
labour use . The difference in seed use rates is insignificant .
The cost of the seeder can be recovered by planting just one
hectare of maize and soybean. The operators, both men an d
women, found the seeder convenient and less tiresome. The depth
regulator a nd the fertilizer application attachment developed
for improving the performance of the seeder have shown
promising results. The seeders were also disseminated through
exhibition , demonstration, distribution an d trainings. The AIT
jab see der is , therefore, a labour- saving a nd drudgery- re du ci ng
planting tool and a meaningful substitute for manual dibbling
in the hills of Nepal . |
