| Abstract | The purpose of this thesis is to study a method to obtain a
least-cost water distribution network with a satisfactory
reliability. The optimization mod e l with continuous diameter
variables are considered to determine an optimal design. The
system reliability is defined as a complement of an expected
failure of the overall demand to be supplied. The maximal flow
problem of the optimal network when one link fails satisfying
hydraulic conditions is considered to obtain the value of
reliability. A method for improving reliability with minimum
increase in cost by increasing the diameter of an appropriate
link in the network is proposed whenever the system reliability
is less than the required value. |
