AbstractConcerning the cutting mechanism of the cutter face in shield , some torque components are not clear yet. In the theoretic model developed for automatic operation of shield machine, these equations concerne<l were proposed based on some assumptions, and were nol confirmed whether are correct or not. A simplified model for cutting mechanism was used in the laboratory to study the torque behavior exhibited in dry sand under the variance of each type of parameter concerned, then formulated this torque behavior in advance, and compared with the equation proposed in theoretic model. From the experimental investigation, the results show that the equation for torque of pushing resistance for sand is slightly different from that proposed in theoretic model.
