| Abstract | Laboratory-scale ultrafiltration experiments using synth etic
protein solution was carried out to study the performance with
respect to t h e operating parameters. The effect of applied
pressure, concentration , cross- flow velocity and membrane cut off
size was studied. The temperature was kept constant.
Higher velocity yield better filtrate flux. Increase in the
applied pressure creates a higher filtrate flux but this was
applicable till the plateau was reached. After the limiting flux
the pressure applied plays a significant role in increasing t h e
gel formation . The effect of high concentration resulted in lower
ultrafiltrate flux and higher gel layer formation. Th e effect of
the gel layer resistance decreased with the increase in the pore
size of the membrane
The mass transfer coefficient increased with higher crossflow velocity and had slight tendency to be decreased with higher
concentration. The effect of the osmotic pressure decreased with
an increased in t h e cross-flow velocity. In t h e long term
experiments the cumulative internal clogging was found to be
increasing even with intermediate washing. The filtrate flux was
found to increase to the initial value after two to three days of
running.
Empirical equations to estimate the ultrafiltrate flux were
formulated in terms of all the parameters as independent
variables. |
