| Abstract | The mobile bed filter with contact flocculation- filtration
arrangement is suitable for domestic wastewater treatment.
Wastewater clogs fixed bed filter very rapidly and causes
necessity of frequent backwash. In mobile bed filter,
backwashing is eliminated by continuous sand recycling .
A laboratory- scale experiment ha s been done to find the
operating parameters (optimum coagulant dose, sand recycle rate,
sand size and sludge withdrawal rate) of mobile bed filter as to
give sufficient removal efficiency for treatment of domestic
wastewater. In practice, it was found that removal efficiency
decreases if the unit runs for a longer time which is not a good
sign for continuo us type filter. This deterioration of water
quality was mainly due to inefficient sludge withdrawal system.
Different modification s were imposed to improve this sludge
withdrawal system and it was found that it is possible to get a
steady and better effluent quality. Finally , the poor removal of
ammonia nitrogen in mobile bed filter was overcome by using
zeolite ion exchange column as a post treatment to mobile bed
filter. |
