| Abstract | Physical modelling is a useful approach to solve the
problems in Geomechanics. It provides direct experiences of
both, expected and unexpected deformations and failure modes
which could not be contemplated in the field (i.e. prototype
scale). In contrast, concepts of mathematical modelling
would incorporate many variable parameters as well as
various similitude quantities, thereby providing a better
and more fundamental basis for both experimental design and
numerical analysis.
A mathematical model, based on dimensional analysis is
introduced in order to determine similitude quantities which
can be computed and arranged in specific formats to simulate
accurately the field conditions and subsequent behaviour. A
computer program is developed to make the computation more
efficient.
The application of this proposed model in modelling of
stress- strain behaviour as well as for underground
excavations and in foundations are also discussed in order
to facilitate comprehension and application of the proposed
model in practice. The results are justified by the
utilization of these quantities in the past by several
investigators. |
