| Abstract | Ballast and subgrade play a major role in the maintenance
life of track structures, because they are the source of the
accumulative permanent deformation associated with
deterioration of surface and line. Ballast is also the
principal means of correcting for this deterioration caused by
traffic and environmental factors. However, better methods
are still needed for predicting the effect of the controlling
parameters on track performance for rational track design and
maintenance planning.
A series of static and cyclic triaxial tests were carried
out on compacted greywacke sandstone to study the permanent
strain due to cyclic load.
The strength characteristics of the granular material
under different initial stress states were also investigated
both before and after cyclic loading. It has been shown that
the shear strength increases as the initial shear stress
increases for both the virgin samples and post- cyclic load
samples.
The results of different staged cyclic load tests on
isotropically and anisotropically consolidated samples have
shown that the residual strain (after 4000 cycles> of both
fully saturated and air- dried samples subjected to 0. 4 - 0.1 -
0. 2 - 0. 3 kgf/cm2 staged load is higher than that of the samples
subjected to 0. 1 - 0. 2 - 0. 3-0. 4 kgf/cm2 staged load.
Finally, different fine contents CFC s 5%> put into
samples were also investigated in this study. However there
was no evidence that the fine content has any effect on either
shear strength or residual strain. |
