| Abstract | A model material made of gypsum/celite and water was used
to simulate and study the strength behavior of rock joints.
Laboratory shear tests were performed on models with different
joint roughness , with and without infill (dry bentonite), and
on infill material alone to provide an experimental aspect for
interpreting the shear behavior of infilled rock
discontinuity. Test variables include inclination of asperity,
wav e length of the asperity , infill thickness, and normal
loads . The result showed significant effect of infill
thickness and joint geometry, as well as normal loads, on the
shear behavior of infilled rock discontinuities. The effects
of joint roughness and normal loads were found to be more
pronounced when infill was thin compared to the amplitude of
the asperity. The infill thickness required to reduce strength
of an unfilled rock joint to that of infill alone was found to
be significantly affected by amplitude of the joint roughness.
For infilled rock joints with asperity inclination of both 30°
and 15°, strength of infilled rock joint approached strength
of infill material when the infill thickness is approximately
more than twice the asperity amplitude. An approach to predict
the strength of infilled rock joint is suggested. |
