| Abstract | Sri Jayawardanapura, t he new administrative capital of Srilanka lies
immediately east of. the commercial ca pi ta l Colombo, with the Padiament
at t he new city centre . Geologically , t he region constituLes of a stable
Pre-cambrian crystalline rock comp l ex overlain by Quaternary formations
of varying or1g1n. Seven geological units are observed in the
area. However , they can be identified into four distinct engineering
geological units;namely , bed rock of garnetiferrous -biotite gneiss and
charnockite, laterite formation, estuarine and flood plain deposits and
beach sediments unit . Major land use problems in the area are the presence
of highly compressible peat (Pt, OH and OL) in estua1·Jne end flood plain
unit and t he drainage problem. Problem of drainage is also ca11sed due to
low elevati on and lack of gradient of the estuarine and flood plain unit.
The region does not have substantial sources of g1·011nd water . But water
for domestic and small scale industrial uses can be generally obtained
from any of t he four units. The main water supply is from Kelani River
and two reservoirs situated upstream of Kelani River. So1id waste is
disposed of as open dumps on many places in the estuarine and flood plain
deposit s . Coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, fill material and china clay
as building material is available at numerous places in The area. The
china clay from Boralesgamuwa is used for ceramic industry. Frequent
flooding of some parts in the region, much of which is The estuarine and
flood plain terrain, is the only recognisable natural hazard in the
area . |
