| Abstract | Despite a large number of recent research studies on
linkages , the study of industrial linkages with emphasis on
small-scale industries in many developing countries such a s
Indonesia is still deficient. This study attempts to look into
the pattern of s mall-scale industrial linkages in Ujung Pandang ,
South Sulawesi, Indonesia . Three sampled industrial categories
were chosen, i .e . , food and drink industry , metal working
industry , and clothing and textile industry which are further
categorised into three subdivision s - 'very small' ( enterprises
of 1 to 4 employees) , ' small - scale ' ( 5 to 9 employees>, and
'smallish' ( 20 employees or more ).
Examination through in put phase, processing phase , a nd
output phase shows that the enterprises t end t o be more local -
oriented, and have heavier reliance on local retailing for all
input categories and depend very much on the wholesalers
/ retailers a t the output marketing , it is mostly in the case of
food a nd drink industry. Most linkages established with other
producing establishments in input procurement are also highly
concentrated in the food and drink industry although lower in the
out put marketing. Of the three categories of establishments, the
'very s mall' category establish the strongest linkages both in
all input procurement and in output marketing. More than fifty
percent of the enterprises ' under utilise ' the production
capacity.
There is a need for a policy, particularly related to
linkage promotion and development, efforts to be made maximally
to utilise the capacity of enterprises and to broaden the soft or
low interest rate loan . |
