| Abstract | An Explicit Stochastic Dynamic Programming which takes into
consideration both the stochasticity of inflow and demand as well
has been developed and used to find the optimal allocation policy
of a n irrigation system supported by a reservoir.
Mae Taeng Irrigation Project (Chi ang Mai , Thailand) which
falls under the tropical climate has been taken as a system to be
studied. Thirty four years of daily records of streamflow and
rainfall and twelve years of daily records of evaporation are
used to get thirty four years demand time series in decade (ten
days) basis. The potential evapotranspiration for the missing
period is generated.
Four different objective functions with demand a nd supply as
stochastic are formulated. Corresponding SDP models when only
inflow is treated as stochastic are also studied. Comparisons of
the policies given b y the eight models thus formulated are
examined by simulation. It is observed that the SDP policies when
demand is taken as stochastic, consistently outperform the
results given, when the demand is take n as deterministic.
Further, it is noted that with t h e increase i n the degree of
strictness in the objective f unction, the violations of policies
in meeting t h e target demand decrease. On the contrary , the
number of failures increases. Policies based on the objective
function with power maximization give the l east number of
failures. Finally this objective f unction is chosen to assess the
adequacy of t h e storage capacity of the proposed reservoir, Sop
Kai. The results indicate that the proposed reservoir is
overdesigned. |
