| Abstract | In 1984, the light rail transit (LRT) was introduced in
Metro Manila, Philippines. Its presence has provided the
people a modern, fast and efficient mode of transportation.
The modal competitiveness of the light rail transit or
Metrorail was analyzed through the determination of the
dominant factors influencing the travel decisions of the
people. These factors influencing the utilization of the
transit modes are highly relevant to basic decisions
concerning future transportation facilities and the desired
growth of the city.The study also identified some changes in
the travel behavior of the light rail transit and jeepney
riders plying along the LRT corridor.
The methodology consisted of conventional on-board
survey and roadside survey applying the direct interview
technique. The binary logit modeling technique was applied
to test and quantify the factors that jointly affected the
travel decisions of the riders.
The data indicated the extent of the catchment area of
the light rail transit. A highly significant portion of the
respondents were generated and attracted to the zones where
the light rail transit traverses. Jeepneys compete as well
as complement the light rail transit ridership.
Results showed that the light rail transit riders
identified travel time as the main reason for their modal
choices. On the other hand, a significant portion of jeepn~y
riders indicated that both time and cost influenced them in
their modal preferences . Further analysis showed that there
is a strong effect of travel cost on modal choice. An
important aspect of transit use involving time is the
waiting time. Other critical factors are sex, income and
household size. |
