| Abstract | The two main purposes of this study are the reliability evaluation of an existing water distribution network and the reliability improvement of the network considered. The reliability of the
network is evaluated considering pipe failures, pump failures and demand variations. The whole
water distribution system is modelled as a collection of independent semi-Markov processes. The
system reliability is defined as the expected value of the ratio of the sum of the regulated maximum
flow at each node weighted by the flow reliability at each node to the total demand and is evaluated
using a nonlinear optimization model. The reliability of the network is improved to a required level
by adding parallel links and parallel/standby pumps. |
