| Abstract | Problem of the raw material of a production process perishing after one period is
considered. Demand for the end product is stationary and deterministic, while the supply of the
raw material varies randomly according to some known distribution with stationary properties.
Dynamic programming is used in finding an optimal production plan. The basic model considers
the case of a single product non-capacitated production process. The cost function involves linear
production, inventory holding and shortage costs in minimizing the total expected cost to the
horizon. It is shown that the problem can be converted to that of Khang[l990]. Basic model is
then extended to capacitated single product and capacitated multi-product cases. Algorithms were
developed to find the optimal solution for the capacitated and non-capacitated single product
cases. It has been shown that for the multi-product case that the above methodology for the single
product capacitated case can be applied together with the Lagrange relaxation method in finding
an optimal production plan. Programs were written and implemented in NEWS-OS work-station.
Results obtained were compared to find the effects of the parameters on the optimal production
policy. |
