| Abstract | This study dealt on the investigation of the travel pattern
of both resident and non-resident tourists in Thailand.
The study was based on the tourist questionnaire survey
which had been conducted by the Tourism Authority of
Thailand in 42 provinces in the year 1987. The 0 - D table
showing number of tourist trips distributed by modes of
transportation are obtained from this survey.
The survey study s how that bus is the most frequently
used mode by both resident and non-resident tourists. Auto,
rail, and air is the less frequently used mode by resident
tourists, respectively whereas air, rail, and auto follows
the same order by non-resident tourists.
In the analysis, an attempt has been made to develop
the tourism travel demand model. The method of conventional
demand and the advanced models are both applied. The
advanced method is the integration of the conventional trip
production mod el . and the nested legit model for mode and
destination share. Comparisons are made of the estimation
results of the two methods. It is found that the nested
logit model give the better results of mode share estimation
than the conventional modal split.
Empirical results show that the population and per
capita income can be used as forecasting variables for
number of tourist trips departing from the origin.
Whereas, the number of hotel rooms can be used as a
forecasting variable for number of tourist trips attracted
to the destination province. Travel time and fare of every
mode which is available between the 0-D pair can be used as
the explanatory variables for the mode share characteristics
of tourist trips. |
