AbstractHigh cost of foreign technology appeared to be a predominant issue in the international transfer of commercial technology, and it was also widely acclaimed that the major cause of excessive technological payment was the lack of bargaining power on the recipient. A hypothetical model based on multiple linear regression aimed at estimating and explaining the levels and determinants of the explicit costs of technology transfer and its corresponding output performances was proposed. Attempt was made to apply the model to some selected technology transfer projects in the manufacturing industries of Thailand. Results of statistical analysis had indicated that resource costs <explicit cost) of transfer and the corresponding productivities and profitability were determined by different subsets of variables in different industries, with different magnitude of impact. These were due to the fact that different industrial sectors consume different proportions of transfer resources at both hardware and software levels. In the study, evidence for these patterns of transfer resource commitment were obvious, even under a broad categorization of the sample into continuous process <a selected group of projects from the textile industry) and discrete process subgroups. Nevertheless, there were apparent indications of two factors namely the transfer mechanisms and the number of previous "startup" experiences the transferor has with the technology; that have predominant effect on the transfer costs and as well as productivities and profitability of the transfer projects.
