| Abstract | A downdraft gasifier with hybrid air distribution
system has been fabricated a nd tested. The gasifier is 70
cm in diameter and 2. 5 m in h eight and is fitted with a
c hoke plate of diameter 12 cm. A feature of the design is
the provision for feeding for continuous operation. Details
of the design aspect of the gasifier and the performance
when operating with different types of fuel are presented .
Attention has been focussed on the tar content and gas
quality of woodchips at different h earth loads. It was
found that the hybrid air distribution system produced less
tar but lower gas quality compared to the conventional
supply of air through the tuyeres at the same air flowrate.
Gasification of sawdust briquettes was also studied. The
gas quality in this case was better al though the pressure
drop was higher compared to wood gasification.
Gasification of cold briquettes made from composted
bagasse was also attempted. The result obtained was not
encouraging since l ow combustibles in the product gas was
recorded. Oxygen content was high at about 12%, probably
due t o low reactivity of the fuel and oxidant so that the
oxygen was not totally utilized .
The behaviour of fluidized bed corn cob gasification
has also been investigated and the effect of air fuel ratio
on gas composition at different corn cob feedrates are
considered. Results s h owed decrease in carbon monoxide
generated at higher air fuel ratio and the maximum carbon
monoxide content recorded is 13.5%. Some of the problems
encountered during the experiment are also discussed. |
